Brands and retailers are using the popularity of bourbon to sell more bottles for higher prices. Why does it matter? Just because there’s a misguided use of terms doesn’t mean we don’t have a problem. Last time I bought Pappy my decision wasn’t, buy an exquisite and elusive bottle of wheated bourbon OR provide food for my son. Profiteering at best but even that’s a stretch. They’re selling a premium product at premium prices. These liquor stores aren’t jacking up the price of water or gas after a natural disaster. I don’t like either of the previous examples but what’s going on in the bourbon world today isn’t price gouging. Gourgers include brands that have jumped at the opportunity to release limited edition whiskeys for $100+. Who are the price gougers? They’re the retailers that charge secondary and above prices. Thomas S.Price gougers have joined the ranks of flippers as bourbon public enemy number 1. In this first chart, you’ll find a long list of American whiskey brands organized by their distillery/producer, which is listed in alphabetical order. So I pulled from their list and expanded upon it to include more than just 2020 releases and allocated bourbons. Luckily, cell phones exist, so this can live in my back pocket (more accurately, fanny pack). I would love to have this reference in my back pocket every time I step into a bottle shop. Recently Bourbon Culture posted “ The Bourbon Brown Book-2020 Edition” where they listed the retail price of rare and allocated American whiskeys released in 2020 versus their secondary market price. But I’m not always on my price-checking-game when I’m browsing a bottle shop. I always feel duped when I find out that I just paid much more for a bottle than it’s worth. I’ve been that customer more than once, however usually by accident. The demand is there for certain allocated brands or releases, so customers will pay way over MSRP to get them. Often I walk into a liquor store and see absurd prices for booze. And I’m not someone to go to secondary markets where you can usually find whatever you want albeit at a very high price. Your whiskey MSRP (Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price) reference chartĭoes browsing through certain online liquor stores infuriate anyone else? Everything I want is either sold out or marked up.
